Coded Trades Privacy Policy

About This Policy

This Privacy Policy explains what personal information Coded Trades collects, why we collect it, how we use and share it, and the choices you have. It covers the Coded Trades websites, course platform, quizzes and study content (the “Site”), including codedtrades.ca, plumbingredseal.ca and codedtradesquiz.ca.

Coded Trades is based in British Columbia, Canada. In this policy, “Coded Trades”, “we”, “us” and “our” mean the business named in our Terms and Conditions, which is responsible for the personal information described here. “You” means anyone using the Site.

We handle personal information in line with Canada’s privacy laws, including the federal Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and British Columbia’s Personal Information Protection Act. This policy forms part of our Terms of Use.

Information We Collect

We only collect what we need to run the Site and our courses.

Information you give us:

  • Your name, email address and login details when you create an account
  • Billing details when you buy a course, such as your name, billing address and payment method. Our payment processors handle your card details, so we never see or store your full card number.
  • Messages you send us, such as questions, feedback, error reports and support requests
  • A copy of your official exam result, if you ask for the “didn’t pass” renewal
  • Information you share to support a request for free or reduced-price access
  • Testimonials, reviews or photos you choose to send us

Information collected when you use the Site:

  • Your course activity, such as lessons started and completed, and quiz activity
  • Technical information, such as your IP address, browser and device type, the pages you visit, and the date and time of your visit
  • Information from cookies and similar tools, as explained under Cookies and Similar Tools below

Information from other sources:

  • Confirmation from our payment processors that your payment went through
  • Information from advertising platforms about whether someone who clicked one of our ads went on to visit the Site or buy a course

How We Use Your Information

We use your information to:

  • Create and manage your account, and give you access to the courses you buy
  • Process payments, send receipts and keep business and tax records
  • Handle “didn’t pass” renewals and requests for free or reduced-price access
  • Answer your questions and support requests
  • Send you important messages about your account, your course or changes to our policies
  • Send you marketing emails, such as news about new courses or offers, if you’ve agreed to get them or the law otherwise allows it
  • Understand how the Site is used, so we can improve our lessons and quizzes
  • Keep the Site and our course content secure, including spotting shared accounts, fraud and misuse
  • Follow the law and enforce our Terms of Use

If you send us a testimonial, review or photo, we’ll only publish it with your permission, and only with the name details you agree to, such as your first name and last initial.

We won’t use your personal information for a new purpose without telling you first and, where the law requires it, asking for your consent.

By using the Site, creating an account or buying a course, you agree that we can collect, use and share your information as this policy describes.

We’ll ask for your clear consent before sending you marketing emails, unless Canada’s anti-spam law allows us to send them without it. Every marketing email has an unsubscribe link.

You can withdraw your consent at any time by contacting us, subject to legal or contract limits. If you withdraw consent for things we need to run your account, we may not be able to keep providing the course.

Who We Share It With

We don’t sell or rent your personal information.

We share it only with companies that help us run Coded Trades, and only what they need to do that job:

  • Thinkific, our course platform, which hosts the Site, your account and our courses
  • Payment processors, such as Stripe, which handle payments for us
  • Cloudflare, which hosts our quizzes and helps protect the Site
  • Email and communication services, which we use to send and receive emails
  • Analytics and advertising services, such as Google, which help us understand how people find and use the Site
  • Professional advisers, such as our accountant or lawyer, when we need them

These companies may only use your information to provide services to us. Some of them also have their own privacy policies.

We may also share your information:

  • When the law requires it, or to respond to a valid request from police, courts or other authorities
  • To protect our rights, our course content or the safety of others
  • If Coded Trades is sold or reorganized, with the new owner, who will have to protect your information in line with this policy

Cookies and Similar Tools

Cookies are small files your browser saves when you visit a website. We and our service providers use cookies and similar tools to:

  • Keep you logged in and make checkout work, which the Site needs to function
  • Remember your preferences
  • Measure how the Site is used
  • See whether our ads are working

You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. If you block the cookies the Site needs, some parts of it, like logging in or buying a course, may not work. You can also manage how Google uses your information for ads in your Google account settings.

Where Your Information Is Stored

We’re based in Canada, but some of our service providers store or process information in other countries, including the United States. When that happens, your information is subject to the laws of those countries, and authorities there may be able to access it. We choose providers that protect personal information to a standard similar to ours.

How Long We Keep It

We keep personal information only for as long as we need it for the reasons in this policy, or as long as the law requires. For example:

  • Account and course records: while your account is open, and for a reasonable time after it closes
  • Payment and tax records: as long as tax law requires, which in Canada is usually six years
  • Exam results sent for a renewal: only as long as we need them to process your renewal, then we delete them
  • Emails and support messages: as long as we need them to deal with your request and keep a record of it

When we no longer need personal information, we delete it or remove anything that identifies you.

How We Protect It

We use reasonable safeguards to protect your information. These include encrypted connections, trusted service providers and giving access only to people who need it.

No website is completely secure, so we can’t promise your information will never be accessed without permission. If a breach creates a real risk of significant harm to you, we’ll let you know and report it as the law requires.

Please keep your login details private, and tell us right away if you think someone has got into your account.

Your Rights and Choices

You can:

  • Ask to see the personal information we hold about you
  • Ask us to correct anything that’s wrong
  • Ask us to delete your account and personal information, unless we need to keep it for legal or business reasons
  • Unsubscribe from marketing emails using the link in any of them
  • Withdraw your consent, as explained above

To make a request, email us at [email protected]. We may need to confirm your identity first. We’ll reply within 30 days, or let you know if we need more time and why.

If you’re not happy with how we’ve handled your information, please contact us first so we can try to fix it. You can also contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada or the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia.

Children and Young People

The Site is meant for apprentices and tradespeople preparing for the Red Seal exam. It isn’t meant for children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect their personal information. If you think a child under 13 has given us personal information, contact us and we’ll delete it.

If you’re under the age of majority where you live (19 in British Columbia), you need a parent or guardian’s permission to use the Site, as our Terms of Use explain.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we’ll post the new version on this page and update the “Last updated” date. If the change is significant, we’ll also let current students know by email.
